I'll never forget when I went into my Royal Bank branch to pay the balance of my student loan in full, in cash, years ahead of the payment schedule.
The teller took the money and said she couldn't credit it to my loan and instead would transfer it to Winnipeg branch. (What's the computer on her desk for then?) ... anyway, I happened to be in Winnipeg a week later, partying with bro and sis and I got a call from RBC complaining that I hadn't paid my loan. They farked up my payment and wanted to know why I had missed a monthly installment. Over the phone they refused to believe that I had already paid the loan in full and they were very rude. Finally, they charged me another week's worth of interest for that teller's mistake. grrrr....
Funny that you should mention HSBC Intl. That was the bank that I was having trouble with.
You were very smart to pay off your student loans so quickly. Considering the way your bank treated you, it was probably time to end your financial relationship with them and move your business elsewhere.
I have had superb service from BMO for many years now. Once they even refunded interest charged to me by Visa when money I had transferred from BMO to pay my Visa account arrived at Visa several days later than the cut-off date.
Canadian embassy recommends some banks for getting a money order in Canadian dollars (for our visa).
I went to the first one they recommend - 30 minutes later it turns out they can't do it. The manager was nice and called her husband to come and take me to his bank, about a block away. He works for a competing bank. 40 minutes there, and they can't do it. They recommend I go to the first bank again or try Citibank.
So I walk to Citibank. They CAN issue a money order in Canadian dollars ... but wait for it ... they WON'T do it for me because my 2 pieces of Korean gov't ID and my Canadian gov't ID are not enough proof of my identity. Yeah. And that decision has NOTHING to do with my race...? So, I pouted and reasoned loudly and they decided to take a chance and issue the money order for me. But I'd have to open a Citibank account first. An hour and a half later, the check is in my hands. ... phew
This summer I moved to Ottawa to start a new job.
When a visitor comes to Ottawa he or she is likely to have limited time and will want to see the major attractions: Parliament, the Canal, the Babe (Balcony type, of course). Since there are other little tidbits that are interesting, but not necessarily interesting enough to visit, I will make some short blog posts about them for your reading pleasure.

I hate and fear banks.
