School days

My application to take distance learning courses at Athabasca was finally processed. The result is that I was accepted back into University. I will be starting courses in a few weeks or a month using distance learning.

To celebrate I went out and bought beer. It's good to be a student again. lol

I'm doing a master of arts degree. I didn't have a specialty until this weekend when the uni asked me to submit my "learning plan". I looked at all the courses that look interesting and since most of them fall into the Cultural Studies category, by default I am majoring in Cultural Studies. Subject to change.

I'm actually surprised that they wanted a learning plan. I thought that a liberal arts education would be broadly based and somewhat free-form but apparently my studies need to lead in a logical direction so that I will be successful in the final research project. I'll let you know how it goes.

If you're interested in reading some interesting essays, the MIT open course ware website has published a lot of work by students.

The other day I had several hours to kill at work so I read a long essay on the history of a river. The writer talked about many topics including water rights, land use, the effects of building homes on a flood plane, army corps of engineer solutions to water way management, community activism and a host of other issues. It was very interesting and it left me wanting to read more essays like it.

Check it out at this link. If you select a course and look at the description you will see whether MIT has published any of the students' work. If so, happy reading.
