The Rideau Canal and the Rideau River

These two photos show the difference between the canal and the river, both of which run through Ottawa. The canal is a man made waterway which is flat and has controlled water flow. The river is a natural waterway which makes its way through the city parallel to the canal. These two photos were taken on the Sunday morning bike ride when Col By Drive was closed to traffic. The photo of the canal shows a stadium in the background. This pic is included for architectural interest.

Very interesting. One will be well advised to skate on the canal rather than the river like they do in the 'Peg.

The river looks very beautiful - perfect spot to read a book and listen to the flowing water. The canal is wider than I had imagined.

For water lovers, this is an ideal place to be. The canal is a little tame but the river is really pretty and there are lots of interesting bike and car routes along it. I'll post more info as I explore a bit more.
